New High School

Otsego, Michigan // 208,800 sq. ft.

Client Challenge

Otsego Public Schools wished to provide the city with a new flagship high school to reinvigorate the community.

TowerPinkster Solution

The new facility features an impressive entrance which opens onto a two-story, 24,700 SF Commons Area that serves as the unifying space between three zones: academics, fine arts, and athletics. The Commons Area is multi-functional and combines spaces for study and reflection, dining, project areas, and casual interaction. The circulation path boasts a pedestrian bridge and a large, two-story, glass curtain wall. Although the new, two-story space was not a feature in the former high school, it has not added to the school’s energy use. In fact, the new facility is operating more efficiently than the former high school. Carefully chosen interior materials create individual “store-fronts” for access to the media center, administrative offices, counseling, school store, gymnasiums, auditorium, and cafeteria. Outdoor athletic amenities were also renovated. Leaving the existing stadium in place, TowerPinkster designed a new stadium entry, concessions, team rooms, and a new press box. The athletic complex features a synthetic turf field and a resilient-surface track. The complex also includes new ball fields and tennis courts.
