Jail and District Court Expansion

Washtenaw County identified four primary objectives including a 96-bed addition to the county jail; expansion and improvements to jail infrastructure and support services; HVAC upgrades to address indoor air quality and energy consumption; and a new facility for 14A District Court. A space needs study was conducted by TowerPinkster and HOK, and the overall design includes:
Public Entrance – Court and Jail:
- Single point of access to 14A District Court, Sheriff’s Administration, and Jail
14A District Court:
- Three court sets each consisting of Judge’s Chambers and Court Room with a shared Jury Deliberation Room
- Secure holding areas for inmates
- Court Administration
- Multi-purpose jury assembly and public meeting room
- Office suites for Public Defenders and Prosecutor’s Office
Jail:
- 112-bed addition to inmate housing
- New intake, transfer, and release center with holding and detox cells, book-in stations, medical exam, and interview rooms, and vehicle sallyport
- Renovation of existing intake for a special observation unit
- Video visitation
- Enclosed and secure pedestrian link to 14A District Court holding areas
